Friday Afternoon

Blake looks like a deer caught in headlights when I walk into his office.

“Sure. Yep, I will get right on it,” he tells the person on the phone. “Yes. Well, she is the best at most things.”

He’s talking about me. The question is, who is he talking to?

“I will. Don’t worry about it. I promise,” he says, still looking at me. He smirks. He’s up to something. “I’ll work on it from my end. Absolutely. See you then.”

“New client?” I ask.

“Something like that,” he replies. “What brings you into my corner of hell?”

“It has been that kind of week, hasn’t it?”

“A bit,” he agrees. “Seriously, what’s up?”

I close his door. “Blake…”

“Hannah, what’s going on?”

“Morgan texted me earlier.”

“Okay?”

“I just… She said she needs to talk to me when she gets home. She wants to meet at my place Sunday night instead of going out somewhere.”

“So? She probably wants to tell you about the trip.”

I nod.

“Is there something else she’d want to talk about?” Blake asks.

“I think they made her an offer.”

“Probably did.”

I hang my head.

“I told you to talk to her before she left.”

“And, I told you I wasn’t about to…”

“You know, you really need to wake up,” he says.

“What?”

Blake grabs a pen and starts chewing on it.

“Blake! What the hell?”

He throws the pen on the desk. “You need to tell her, Hannah.”

“Tell her what? That I’m attracted to her? Christ himself would be attracted to Morgan. That’s not a newsflash.”

He chuckles. “That you love her, you idiot.”

I stare at him.

He rolls his eyes. “Forget it.”

“Forget what? Um, Blake, unless I am missing something here, Morgan is still involved with Grayson.”

“You’re missing a lot more than something.”

“Very funny.”

“Maybe your problem is that you’re missing what Grayson had.”

“Had? She just had Morgan. And, Blake? I don’t want to give you details, but after what I saw, I don’t think I’m Morgan’s type.”

“You don’t know what type you are.”

“What the hell does that even mean?”

“It means what I said. You think because Morgan slept with Grayson, she wouldn’t sleep with you? That’s stupid.”

I rub my brow. I do not want to have this conversation, not now—not ever. “Why does everything come down to sex with you?” I counter.

“It doesn’t.”

I look at Blake as though he’s gone mad.

“It doesn’t, not to me.”

“It’s all you talk about.”

“It doesn’t mean I’m shallow, Hannah.”

Now, I feel like shit. I don’t think Blake is shallow. “That’s not what I meant.”

“Yeah, it is. You think everything in life comes down to rules and schedules.”

“It does.”

Blake scoffs at my remark. “No, it doesn’t.”

“How are you supposed to get anywhere without rules? And, what’s wrong with schedules?”

“Nothing. Rules change and so do schedules, Hannah. You think that the same ideas you had when we were fifteen are still what you should aspire to.”

“I wanted to be an astronaut at fifteen,” I quip.

“You know what I mean. Go to college, find a partner, get a great-paying job, be successful, have a nice, ordered life.”

“And?”

“And, order is overrated,” Blake says. “You order everything.
